The summer school
CNESS Summer School provides the opportunity to attend an intensive academic programme with lectures covering the most prominent energy-related topics (politics, engineering, construction, business, etc.). The one-week intensive course includes theoretical elements and practical training through case studies, mock cases, and discussions. The 2024 version of our summer school will strongly focus on energy security, which includes a wide range of areas, disciplines, and challenges. Furthermore, the summer school offers visits to energy facilities, professional guest lectures, a poster session, and a social programme to introduce the participants to Nordic life and culture.
Aim
CNESS Summer School aims to support the development of the students’ competencies in topics related to energy and climate neutrality through a multidisciplinary programme. After the summer school, participants will gain an understanding of the energy systems in their full complexity, across disciplines, and in light of current energy security-related challenges (e.g., policy, grid management, nuclear energy, etc.). The course also offers students access to a platform and network of researchers from different fields and backgrounds that will support their future careers in the area of energy research and beyond.
Eligibility
We are looking for highly motivated postgraduate students (masters or PhDs) and early-stage researchers from all energy-related disciplines. In addition, we invite young professionals from governmental institutions, companies, think tanks, and NGOs to apply too. Approximately 20 students will be admitted to the summer school to ensure interactive courses and discussions. The selected students are expected to participate fully in the programme by attending all classes, lectures, and site visits.
All applicants must present their current research project or professional work related to energy security (international politics, grid management, energy transition, nuclear safety, etc.) in a poster presentation during the summer school. The poster (size ‘AO’, portrait format and printed beforehand) should briefly summarise the applicant’s work to a multidisciplinary audience. The best poster will be awarded at the end of the summer school year.
Fees and other costs
The summer school is free of charge. Furthermore, CNESS covers the accommodation costs at a hotel in the city centre of Tampere, close to four small hydropower plants built between 1916 and 1938. CNESS does not cover transportation costs from the student’s host country to Finland and back.
